The largest of Australia's native kingfisher varieties, its name, 'Kookaburra' is derived from the Wiradjuri* name 'Gugubarra'. *An aboriginal dialect from the traditional custodians of the lands surrounding Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, known as Wiradjuri country.
