Description
The plot centers on judicial investigator Ivan Kamyshev, who hands an editor his manuscript detailing tragic events at a country estate. Kamyshev, Count Karneev, and the bailiff Urbenin find themselves entangled in a fatal love polygon with the beautiful Olenka Skvortsova, a forest warden’s daughter. Driven by a thirst for wealth and a life of luxury, Olenka marries the middle-aged Urbenin while simultaneously carrying on affairs with the Count and Kamyshev himself. During a hunting party, the young woman is found mortally wounded, and her husband Urbenin is accused of the murder and sent to hard labor. However, years later, it is revealed that justice made a fatal error, and the real criminal has remained free all this time.
