While most of our Erté Collection showcases powerful and fashionable women, this serene and unassuming scene distinguishes itself with its unique simplicity, evoking a sense of tranquility and peace. Erté (1892-1990), whose birth name was Romain de Tirtoff, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. After collaborating with the renowned Paul "Le Magnifique" Poiret on various theatrical productions, Erté ventured into independent work. He crafted stunning costume and fashion designs for the most celebrated actresses of his time, like Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, and Norma Shearer, to name a few. His breathtaking stage designs graced iconic venues such as New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Paris Opera. His artistic design work in fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume, and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor rightfully earned him the title "The Father of the Art Deco Movement."
