Risography is a printing technique that sits somewhere between analog and digital, and is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. With riso you print one color at a time, similar to screen printing. The inks are partially transparent, which means they blend easily when you print multiple colors on top of each other. The print is created by perforation of a membrane that sits around the ink drum, so if you look very closely at the print you can see it is made up of many small dots, just like in screen printing. This creates a beautiful and vibrant surface that gives a slightly analog look. The inks are rice-based, which makes them radically more sustainable than, for example, laser prints, where the ink is based on plastic. Many risography printers have a much wider selection of colors than common print shops, which is why you can often also print in, for example, neon colors without extra cost. The possibilities for producing color-strong and unique prints are therefore many.
