How cedar balls work against moths It is not the wood itself that does the work, but the aromatic red cedar oil that is naturally stored in the fibers. This is how it works biologically: - They disrupt the sense of smell and mating: Adult moths are guided entirely by scent particles and pheromones (mating hormones) when they search for a partner or a good place to lay eggs. The scent of cedar blocks and disrupts these receptors. The moths become disoriented and prefer to flee the area rather than settle there. - They stop growth: If a moth still manages to lay eggs, the cedar oil has a toxic effect on the newly hatched, microscopic moth larvae as well as the eggs, causing them to die at an early stage. Important to know: Cedar balls generally do not kill already fully grown adult moths or large, well-fed larvae. Instead they act as a preventive shield that ensures a new infestation does not start. How to use them most effectively To get maximum effect from your cedar balls there are a few golden rules: - Sanitize first during an active infestation: If you already have moths in the wardrobe you must empty it, vacuum thoroughly (especially in mouldings and crevices) and wash the clothes at least 60°C (or freeze them for 48 hours) to get rid of existing larvae and eggs before placing the cedar wood inside. - Use in closed spaces: Cedar oil is volatile. If you put the balls on an open clothes rack the scent will dissipate immediately. You get the best effect in closed drawers, wardrobes, garment bags or vacuum bags where the scent can concentrate. - Protect delicate garments: Because cedar contains natural oils it can leave grease marks on light or very delicate fabrics (such as silk and fine white wool). Place the balls on a piece of paper, in a small mesh bag or in the pocket of an outer garment instead of directly on your favorite sweater. How to revive old balls After a few months you may notice that the balls don’t smell as much anymore because the outermost layer of wood has dried out. However, you do not need to throw them away! Cedar essentially lasts a lifetime. To reactivate them, simply take fine sandpaper and lightly sand the surface. This opens the wood’s pores again and fresh red cedar oil can seep out. You can also boost the effect by spraying concentrated red cedar oil on the balls from time to time.
