Venerable Abbot Joseph of Volotsk (Volokolamsk). Wooden orthodox icon. Around 1459, at the age of about 20, the saint took monastic vows. He came to Borovsk to the monastery of Paphnutius of Borovsk, where he lived for 18 years under the guidance of Saint Paphnutius. The saint's elderly father, who lived with him in the same cell and whom Joseph looked after for 15 years, also came to the monastery. In 1477, after the death of Saint Paphnutius, the monk Joseph was appointed abbot of the monastery. His own monastery lived according to the strictest rules, he himself wore a shabby cassock. During the famine, the monks distributed all their supplies to the surrounding residents and even bought bread for them with monastery money. It was not in vain that Saint Joseph gained fame as a pillar of Russian monasticism. He never sought anything for himself personally. Neither wealth, nor glory, nor the position of a court priest. He spoke and acted, defending his faith, his Church, and the monastic brethren in his monastery. He was a true monk, who despised all the blessings of this world for the sake of Christ. All-Russian veneration of him was established in 1589. Reverend Joseph was canonized as an exemplary monk, a denouncer of heresies and a great miracle worker.
