The St. Johns River flows through Lake Monroe, a 9,406-acre lake and the city of Sanford borders the southern shoreline. In 1870, Henry Sanford planned a new city, “the Gate City of South Florida,” which he believed would become the transportation hub for all of southern Florida as steamboats travelled the St. Johns River. He also developed Belair, a citrus grove and experimental garden near Sanford with more than 140 varieties of citrus, including the Valencia orange.
