Chess has several legends about its creation; it could have been invented during the siege of Troy to entertain the troops, or by the wise Sissa for an Indian king. However, different historians believe that chess originated from the evolution of various Asian games, and none agree on a single theory. The game arrived in Europe through Spain during the Muslim conquest of the country by the Umayyads (around 711). Checkers are the result of the transfer, in the 12th century in France, of the ancient Middle Eastern game Alquerque (which arrived in Europe in the 8th century) onto a 64-square chessboard. It is this first version of the game of checkers that you will play on this board.
