About the producers. Gikirima Factory is one of five wet mills operated by the Kibugu Cooperative Society in Embu County, Central Kenya. High elevations, fertile volcanic soils, and a cool climate allow cherries to mature slowly, contributing to Kenya’s bright acidity and structured cup profile. Ripe cherries are hand-sorted before undergoing Kenya’s traditional washed process. After pulping, the coffee is fermented, thoroughly washed, and separated by density, with the AB grade representing well-formed, medium-sized beans selected for balance and clarity. Drying takes place slowly on raised beds to preserve sweetness and vibrancy. The factory works closely with smallholder farmers, providing guidance on compost use and the timely application of fertilizers to support plant health and yields. Farmers typically manage around two hectares of land, cultivating approximately 300 coffee trees each, often alongside passion fruit, maize, beans, and occasionally tea.
