Description
Before there were ISBN numbers and library databases, there were bookplates. Hand-designed, deeply personal, and often exquisitely illustrated, ex libris bookplates were how private collectors declared ownership of the books they loved. Our Ex Libris tote bag collection brings these forgotten works back into the world, exactly as they were meant to be seen, and a perfect gift for readers and bookish lovers. This plate was created by E.M. Lilien (1874-1925), one of the most celebrated Jewish artists of the Art Nouveau era. Between 1897 and 1907, he designed a collection of 39 bookplates for writers, intellectuals, and cultural figures of his circle, including this one commissioned for Anselm Hartog. Lilien's bookplates are now held in museum and rare book collections worldwide. This restoration brings one of his most intricate designs back to print at the scale and resolution it deserves. Every design in this line is sourced from authentic historic bookplate art and lovingly restored by hand in Adobe Illustrator, preserving every fine line, cross-hatch, and engraved detail at full resolution. No AI, just careful archival work that honors the original artists and the golden age of private library culture. The restored artwork is professionally printed using DTF (direct-to-film) technology and heat pressed in-house, resulting in vivid, richly detailed prints that are machine washable and fade-resistant. These are built to be used, carried, and loved, not just admired.
