Wholesale Art Deco sculpture – Two angelfish – Signed M. Font – Bronze and Portoro marble

Two angelfish in full motion, captured in the rush of their swim. The sculptor M. Font, a French animalier artist active in the 1920s–1930s, belongs to the line of great bronze makers of the interwar period who made fauna their preferred subject. In the tradition of Bugatti, Pompon, or Sandoz, he captures the animal in its purest truth, without anecdote or artifice. Here, the angelfish’s fins unfold like sails stretched by the current. The treatment of the volumes is of absolute restraint. It is the very essence of the French Art Deco animalier style. The bronze has a brown-black patina with golden highlights on the fin edges and rests on a solid Portoro marble base, black veined with gold and white, quarried from Porto Venere in Italy. This marriage of materials is a hallmark of the great decorative productions of the interwar years. The signature M. Font is engraved directly into the bronze, clearly legible, a guarantee of authenticity. Dimensions: approximately 33 cm in height, base approximately 30 cm in length. Condition: very good condition. Slight wear on the back of the base, without alteration to the sculpture. Placed on a living-room piece of furniture or an entryway console, this sculpture commands a silent, elegant presence. It also fits perfectly in a cabinet of curiosities or a carefully curated bookcase.
