A small piece of French tableware as we like it, from the days when cider was still served in those generous bowls you held with both hands around the large country tables. Made in Sarreguemines earthenware, this bowl rests on an elegant footring that gives it a more refined silhouette than ordinary bowls. Its cream ground, gently warmed by time, features a very beautiful stylized floral decoration blending blue-gray, ochre and brown. The flowers no longer seek the naturalism of the 19th century. They are simplified, almost graphic. Geometrized leaves, flat areas of color, grids and parallel lines compose a decidedly modern decoration that leads us toward the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1920s–1930s. It is precisely this mixture that makes it charming. The traditional form of the French cider bowl meets here the new decorative language of the interwar years. At about 11 cm in diameter, it retains pleasing proportions and a lovely enamel sheen. The rim has a small old chip, clearly visible in the photographs, a sign of its use and taken into account in its price. A modest piece by function, but intensely evocative. Sarreguemines, French tables and that graphic elegance of the Art Deco years that knew how to transform everyday objects.
