Description
The Zulu are Southern Africa’s largest ethnic group, known for their distinctive artistry and masterful craftsmanship. In the scenic hills of KwaZulu-Natal, a close-knit community of women artisans continues the centuries-old tradition of basket weaving. For many, this craft preserves cultural heritage and serves as a vital source of income—often their only livelihood. From home, they weave while also caring for children, tending crops, collecting water, and managing household tasks. Sizing (in inches): 12" Height x 15" Diameter Each basket is meticulously handwoven using locally sourced ilala palm and wild banana bark. Styles and shapes differ by region, shaped by natural resources and intended function. Completing a medium-sized basket can take up to a month. This piece features black, orange, and beige tones, naturally dyed using boiled roots, bark, berries, and leaves. A timeless collector’s item that honors heritage and craftsmanship.
