The story says that when the fire in the stable began to fade, the robin used its wings to fan the embers, keeping the baby warm. The red feathers on its chest were seen as a mark of honor from the heat of those flames. Because of this, the robin became a symbol of the "hearth"—the heart of the house—and a protector of the family home. As a character, the robin is a faithful friend who stays with us through the winter. He represents the comfort of a warm room and the courage to stay hopeful even when it is cold outside.
