Description
These beautiful wooden masks have been handcarved with traditional techniques and handpainted using fine detail in imitation of the jaguars that live in the Mayan biosphere in Guatemala. Jaguars are characters in several contemporary Mayan dance dramas that have been performed ceremonially for hundreds of years, and their frequent appearance in surviving precolumbian artworks prove that humans have been masking and costuming themselves as jaguars for thousands of years in Mesoamerica. The quality and detail of these masks are equal to those used in performances, but we offer them as fine decorative objects for your home. The masks have a small hole on their crowns for hanging on a wall. Item details Handcarved from pine cured in an artisanal kiln, painted with aniline wood dyes, adorned with horsehair whiskers and dramatically painted eyes. 25 x 20 x 10 cm (9 7/8 x 8 x 4 inches)
