Founded in 1951 in Rome by twelve young graduates of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, the ensemble performs without a conductor, in the tradition of the great Italian string ensembles. Roberto Michelucci (1921–2004), first violin and soloist of the ensemble for many years, brings to this Concerto K.219 an elegance and warmth that make it a benchmark interpretation. Eine kleine Nachtmusik, one of Mozart’s most beloved works, is here rendered with the lightness and precision that are the hallmarks of I Musici. The Adagio and Fugue K.546, a more severe and profound piece, completes this program happily. The Philips recordings of I Musici, made in the 1960s and 1970s, are today considered classics of the Mozart discography. The sleeve reproduces a nocturnal painting depicting a torchlight procession in an 18th-century cobbled street, figures in period dress, illuminated buildings. Evocative and refined image.
