He was versatile, excelling on both dirt and turf. In the Kentucky Derby, he won by 1 1/2 lengths and set a new track record. Flying Ebony's career earnings totaled $62,420. He retired to stud in 1926 and passed away in 1943 at the age of 21. Flying Ebony was the last of five Kentucky Derby winners bred or co-bred by John Madden at his Hamburg Place, joining the likes of Old Rosebud, Sir Barton, Paul Jones, and Zev.
