The original icon dates to the 19th century and reflects the traditional imagery of Onuphrius as an ascetic clothed only in his long hair and a simple loincloth—symbol of total renunciation of worldly life for the sake of Christ. Saint Onuphrius lived in the Egyptian desert in the 4th century, dedicating himself to silent prayer, fasting, and complete solitude. His life is known from the account of Saint Paphnutius, who met him shortly before his blessed repose. By that time, Onuphrius had spent 60 years alone in the desert, sustained solely by the grace of God and visited by angels who brought him heavenly bread. According to some traditions, Onuphrius was born around 320 in Persia, the son of a king. By divine direction he was given to a monastery as an infant, where he grew in obedience and spiritual wisdom. Deeply moved by the stories of ancient hermits, he secretly departed into the Thebaid desert of Egypt. There he found a holy elder who trained him in ascetic warfare against temptations and passions. After several years of mentoring, the elder left Onuphrius to continue his solitary struggle, visiting him only once a year until his own death.
