2026: it is the 120th anniversary of Victor Vasarely and the 50th anniversary of the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence. On this occasion, we have reprinted the Vasarely pop-up, published in 2014 and out of print since. A tribute to Vasarely, this book stages the universe of the master of Op Art. Philippe UG, paper sculptor and graphic designer, interprets some of his works through a spectacular volumetric presentation. From the Signal sculpture, installed at the entrance to Aix-en-Provence, to the foundation building created by Vasarely, which he called “the Polychrome City of Happiness,” these pages unfold spatial interpretations of the artist’s paintings, somewhat in the manner of the lumino-kinetic sculptures he produced himself. Animated and vibrant with color, these paper architectures translate, uncover, rediscover and at the same time re-enchant the universe of this great artist. In 1969, Vasarely wrote: “The plastic alphabet of universal character is not the contribution of its single creator but the sum of the contributions of the chain of creators who preceded him, plus his own.” So be it.
