Yet a legend suggests that Egyptian navigators, sent by Ramesses II around 1230 BC to sail around the world, were shipwrecked in France, at Le Martray on the Île de Ré. They are said to have lived there and built a small pyramid in tribute to their king. Salt, a symbol of alliance and preservation, has long been part of the island’s heritage, with salt farming deeply rooted in its traditions.
