Baseball became extremely popular during the American Civil War (1861-1865). It was called "America's Pastime" because it was the most widely played sport in our country. Before television, the internet, technology, American football and other sports, baseball was one of the few things that almost every American could relate to. In 1869, the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was created. This was the beginning of professional baseball as we know it today, Major League Baseball (MLB).
