Joop Zoetemelk signed with the new French team Gitane-Frigecreme. Joop, known for his strategic insight and climbing abilities, was the absolute leader of Gitane-Frigecreme. The sponsor Gitane, founded in 1925, grew from a small French bicycle assembler to a renowned brand sponsoring top cyclists. From the 1950s, Gitane achieved success with riders like Jean Stablinski and later Jacques Anquetil, who won four of his five Tour de France victories on a Gitane. The acquisition by Renault in the 1970s led to the dominant Renault-Gitane team, with legends like Bernard Hinault, Laurent Fignon, and Greg Lemond achieving major victories. With riders like Louison Bobet and Jacques Anquetil, Gitane achieved success in the Tour de France. After some lean years, the arrival of Zoetemelk was meant to revive the glory years. Joop won the prologue of the Tour de France in 1973 and the sixth and thirteenth stages. The third place in the overall classification of the Tour of Romandie, behind Wilfried David and Luis Ocaña, and the eighth place in the overall classification of the Tour of Spain. Although the great success was absent, Zoetemelk showed his class in 1973 with these honorary places. During his time with Gitane-Frigecreme, Joop laid the foundation for his later triumphs, including his victory in the 1980 Tour de France. In 1973, ice cream manufacturer Frigecreme was the refreshing co-sponsor. The team's riders were therefore regularly seen with a refreshing ice cream after a tough stage.
