Created in collaboration with The Met, the Khasa Throw pays tribute to a striking, mid-20th-century cotton-and-wool textile from Mali in the Museum’s collection. Woven by Fulani artisans as a personal covering, or khasa, the original textile captivated us with its quiet complexity—a rhythmic arrangement of intricate motifs and a two-panel construction, reminiscent of Ethiopia’s traditional gabi. Our interpretation distills the original pattern’s rhythmic harmony into a contemporary design of handwoven stripes and dashes. Like the  Museum’s khasa, this piece is loomed in two separate panels and joined with wef igir (“bird’s foot”) stitching typical of Ethiopian textile traditions. Designed for versatility, the throw includes a rod pocket at either end, allowing it to double as a wall hanging.
