How We Began! Custom Cordage began in 1998 in the small town of Waldoboro, Maine, just off the Mid-Coast of Maine's scenic coastline, with a small crew we turned our rope making expertise into one of America's finest rope manufacturers of braided ropes and cords. We also had another idea making products using discarded fishing rope which in turn started a whole new business! “The Original Rope Mat Company" From there is where we developed a rope door mat hand made from discarded lobster fishing floating ropes. To address the entanglement of Northern Right Whales within the float rope new federal regulations mandated that lobster fisherman could no longer use float rope to connect their traps together, the fisherman now must use sinking line to connect their traps. The Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation, a non-profit organization received federal monies to buy the rope back from the fisherman to help with the purchase of the new sinking lines. We became aware of the massive quantity of rope (over 2 million pounds) would become available and thought “there ought to be a market for all that rope”> The “Original Maine Rope Mat” is born!! Today, with the dimensioning supply of discarded float rope and the rising popularity of rope door mats, to meet that high demand, we now offer the “Original Maine Rope Mat” made from new fishing rope. We still offer our rope mats made from discarded float rope by your request.
