The castle was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan. In 1494, Ludovico il Moro came to power and the castle became one of the richest and most sumptuous courts in Europe. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Bremente were called upon to decorate the rooms. It was transformed and modified over the centuries and restored by Luca Beltrami between 1890 and 1905.
