These beautiful baskets from Zimbabwe come from the district of Buhera, in the province of Manicaland, in eastern Zimbabwe, bordering Mozambique. Commonly called Buhera baskets in reference to their geographical origin, they are handmade by women with the roots of a large-fruited willow Combretum zeyheri and the stems of an evergreen and invasive climbing plant Cocculus hirsutus. Buhera baskets in the shape of jars are called tsopotwe and are traditionally used to store grain. Their shape is free, which makes each piece unique.
