Violet's heart-shaped leaves made her the original flower of Valentine’s Day, and were often used in love potions until the rose stole her crown! Cultivated by the Ancient Greeks for medicinal purposes and to make perfume, the poet Sappho frequently referenced violets in her work and they have been symbolic of romantic love between women since that time. Seen as an emblem of love and faithfulness, their low growing, bowed heads symbolised modesty.
