Wholesale Ruth

The Book of Ruth tells the story of Ruth, a Moabite widow, who chooses loyalty to her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi, after both lose their husbands. Refusing to abandon Naomi, Ruth commits herself to Naomi’s people and God. Back in Bethlehem, Ruth supports them by gleaning grain in the fields of Boaz, a kind and honorable relative of Naomi’s late husband. Boaz acts as a kinsman-redeemer, legally marrying Ruth to preserve the family line. Their marriage restores Naomi’s hope and security. Ruth gives birth to Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David, placing Ruth—an outsider—squarely in Israel’s royal and messianic lineage.
