The significance of ships and boats has always been present in Bertil Vallien’s life and work. Like an imaginary space, he has journeyed through glass. He sails his boat and sees men fishing, and refugees fleeing for their lives. The similarity of the boat to a seed pod, which could contain any form of life, tickles our attention. Bertil captures our curiosity and if we give the sculpture some time, he makes us participants in the unknown journey that life presents. In this series, Bertil Vallien lines up two of his favorite expressions side by side: blue glass and a gold-painted object. Interpretation of the sculptures is of course up to the individual viewer, but for Bertil, this is first and foremost a playful approach to the ability of glass to continuously change and put its artist to new tests.
