These are antique French paper wedding/party favor boxes, often used as elegant candy containers, fan holders, or delicate gift pouches. The pastoral artwork printed on the front is a quintessential French Toile de Jouy engraving style. Given the Toile de Jouy lithograph illustrations and the construction, these likely date from the Late Victorian era to the Belle Époque period (circa 1880–1910). Originally designed in the 18th century near Versailles, it features romantic, detailed sketches of countryside courtships and gatherings. They come in soft, muted pastel tones including ivory yellow, dusty rose pink, and pale sage green. Each box is held securely near the center with a thin string loop and an attached faux pearl or small bead anchor. These are traditional boîtes à dragées (French sugared almond favor holders), a classic staple of historic French weddings, baptisms, and communions. In French culture, sweet dragées (sugared almonds) symbolize good luck, health, prosperity, and longevity. Guests are traditionally given these specific styled containers as a thank-you token. These are new old stock from a French store. These were found in the stockroom of a long-closed shop. These are not in perfect condition, but they are beautiful. They are discolored in spots, with age-related flecks, as they haven't seen the light of day for years. The bottoms are box-bottomed with small square inserts lining the bottom. These are perfect for display, but we do not advise using them for food. Each paper box measures approximately 3"wide at the bottom, 1.25" deep, and about 7.25" tall.
