Most Africans have a strong sense of spirituality and their own connection with the environment. They celebrate and worship this spirituality through small shrines in their homes in which they incorporate objects that represent aspects of that relationship that are very personal to them, their family and their ancestry. The turtle always represents persistence and continuity. This turtle figure was actually part of one of those shrines in a Dogon person's home in Mali for a very long time. 11 x 6 1/4 x 4 3/4" (28 x 16 x 12 cm)
