The transformation began with Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” which described him as a “jolly old elf” with a “little round belly.” This depiction inspired political cartoonist Thomas Nast, who in 1881 created the now-iconic image of Santa Claus: a cheerful, white-bearded man in a red suit, carrying a sack of toys.
