The Tradescantia zebrina, with leaves featuring silver and green stripes and a purple underside (pictured), and the Tradescantia pallida or Tradescantia purpurea, with dark purple almost bluish foliage, are just two of the most commonly used species of the genus due to their attractiveness and ease of cultivation. They are perennial succulent plants with a trailing or creeping effect, native to tropical and subtropical America (from Mexico to Argentina), and can only live outdoors in hardiness zones 9-11, as they suffer when the temperature drops below -3ºC.
