The crown of bright green leaves of the cycad (Cycas revoluta), which is grown outdoors in areas near the Mediterranean and as an indoor plant, resembles both palm trees and tree ferns. The Cycas circinalis, with longer and more feathery leaves, is known precisely as a fern palm. But they are neither one nor the other. These species belong to a botanical family whose lineage dates back to the Paleozoic era (see the box). They are very slow-growing plants: the crown of the Cycas revoluta can take 10 years to reach its maximum size.
