It spans thousands of years. Gas bubbles form in the cooling lava, creating cavities. Slowly, these cavities fill with a silica-rich solution, carried by groundwater. Under pressure, minerals deposit in successive layers, creating surprising and flamboyant patterns. Thus, this process, which can last several million years, gives rise to the concentric and colored bands typical of agate. It is the iron oxides that give this magnificent stone its deep hues, ranging from brick red to copper brown. Belonging to the family of microcrystalline quartz, red agate has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For reference, diamond has a hardness of 10, the highest on this scale. It has long been used in the making of cabochons, small decorative objects, or ornamental tools. Indeed, it is easily cut and polished while retaining its solidity.
