Description

These unique bags result from centuries-old techniques passed down through generations within the Wichi indigenous community of Argentina. Each piece tells a story of craftsmanship, culture, and sustainability, made from the resilient chaguar plant native to the semi-arid Chaco region in northern Argentina. Size: 29cm (height) vs 30cm (width) Material: Chaguar fibre (Bromelia) The Crafting Process: A Labor of Tradition and Care The chaguar plant, from the Bromelia family, grows in the wild and provides durable fibres perfect for weaving. Wichi women venture into the forest in small groups to harvest this special material, hand-picking the chaguar leaves. The process of creating these bags and textiles is both intricate and time-honored: 1. Harvesting: The fibres are carefully separated by hand after collecting the leaves. 2. Spinning: The fibres are spun into strong threads by rolling them on the women's thighs. 3. Dyeing: Natural pigments from roots, seeds, and fruits are used to dye the fibres, creating rich and earthy tones in each piece. 4. Weaving: The fibres are meticulously hand-woven into beautiful bags and cushions, using patterns inspired by the natural world.
