They are said to live as seals in the ocean but can shed their seal skin to take human form on land. According to legend, if a human steals and hides a selkie’s seal skin, the selkie is bound to stay on land and often becomes their unwilling spouse. However, the selkie will constantly long for the sea, and once they find their hidden skin, they return to the ocean, abandoning their human life and family. Selkie stories are often tragic, reflecting themes of love, loss, and the call of the sea.
