It is composed of fossilized wood where all traces of organic matter have been replaced by minerals (most often silicates, like quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrification process occurs when the wood is buried under a layer of sediment, where it is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen, before mineral-rich water circulates through the sediments and gradually replaces the wood cells with minerals.
