About Horatio Clay

A BIT ABOUT HORATIO I will try and keep this short…..but I will fail! The first thing people ask me about is the name. My Grandfather was called Horatio. He was an Anguillian man that came to the the U.K and settled in Stoke-on-trent. That’s were my mother, me and most of my immediate family where born. Stoke-on-trent is the home of ceramics in the U.K. Aptly nicknamed The Potteries’. I grew up with my grandfather and helped him in his allotment from an early age. The soil was full of fragments of ceramics, Spode, Burleigh, Wedgewood, clay pipes and industrial pottery fragments. A history of hand work and craft scattered in the soil he grew his vegetables in. I would collect these and keep them like precious jewels. Mesmerised by the contrast of the rough edges and the slick thin layer of glass that transformed this mud into precious gems. Years went by and I went to art school, and ended up studying and working in fashion. In 2016 my grandfather passed away. I missed him and wanted to do things that reminded me of him, or things he would be proud of me for. I was also missing my own creative freedom. I was thinking about clay and decided to take some classes. The rest has all fallen into shape quite naturally. I started with a love of making moons. The rest of the Horatio collection so far has come from a need to learn and a curiosity of the world between art and function. Horatio in 3 words.
