About Time Travel Art

I combine historical images with modern photos to create a "then and now" style that I call Time Travel Photography. [From the artists:] I often walk around historic cities imagining what it must have been like back in their heyday. How many people walked up the Main Street over the years? Who were they? Where were they going? There are layers of stories, layers of time in each sidewalk, building, doorknob and ghost sign. I have a fascination with the dichotomy of “then and now.” Of old and new. Of history vs. today. Of what has changed, and what is still the same. [Creating the Work:] First, I find historic images that interest me. Next, I trace the major lines of each structure with a sharpie onto a transparency. Then, I walk the scene, and look through the transparency until all of the structures line up with the historic photo. Next, I photograph the scene. Finally, I layer the “today” photo with the historic image in Photoshop. ***My favorite part: Once the two images are perfectly aligned, it feels like magic painting in and out history and today.
