About Shelly Whidbey Arts

Art is my passion; I've always loved creating with my hands. Growing up in a Navy family, we moved often, living in Virginia, Texas, Japan, and Guam before settling in Oak Harbor, WA, on Whidbey Island in 1993. This diverse upbringing exposed me to various cultural traditions that I incorporate into my art. After graduating from Coupeville High School, I attended Bellingham Technical College, earning an associate degree in Welding Technology. As a welder, I delved into metalwork, creating sculptures and kitchenware in my spare time. Participating in the Welding Rodeo Competition was a thrilling way to merge my love for art with my career. However, I eventually left welding due to its health risks. Seeking a new creative outlet, I took up knitting, crafting scarves, sweaters, blankets, and baby clothes for my family. I also volunteered as a knitter for Navy families through The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. After our first child was born, my husband and I returned to beautiful Whidbey Island. One day, while out with my daughter, I discovered Whidbey Island Rocks, rekindling my love for painting, drawing, and creating with my hands. Since then, my passion for painting has only grown. I cherish my two beautiful daughters, who keep me on my toes. When they sleep, I stay up late painting. The joy I find in creating art that others appreciate is immense. I look forward to continuing my artistic journey, expanding my work from rocks to canvas.
