Viticulture has been present in the history of Andújar since time immemorial. In the 17th century, the vineyard was concentrated in the areas called Peñallana, La Alcaparrosa and Los Majuelos. Each house had its own winery and winery. This fact led to the names of the houses of the Sierra “Viñas”. In the middle of the 20th century, a total of 602 hectares of vineyards remained in the area of Las Viñas de Peñallana, “which was yesterday”. Currently, the Viñas Tintas Capellanías winery, due to the interest shown by the viticulturist and winemaker José Luis Navarro Cruz, is trying to recover and resume part of the millennial cultural tradition of wine in the area. The vineyards are located in the vicinity of the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Our Lady of the Head, specifically on the Alcaparrosa road, known as Pago de Capellanías and/or Viñas de Peñallana. The orography of the place: 600 m of altitude, sandy lands and the orientation of the vineyard are the perfect combination to give the wine a body and a character, defined by the French as “le terrain” (“the terrain”). The spectacle of colors and smells due to the diverse flora and fauna of the Mediterranean forest of the place, are elements of influence in the development of the aromatic complexity of this wine. The varieties cultivated are Tempranillo, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and some centuries-old strains, such as the Jaén Tinta variety.
