The Monaco Distillery may be the first and only distillery in Monaco, but in the past, this emblematic Principality was agricultural land. Long before tourism, yachts and the Grand Prix, citrus production was a pillar of the local economy and the Principality was renowned for its numerous delicate and Mediterranean fruits. These sunny citrus fruits were exchanged for rum by seafarers on merchant ships seeking to avoid scurvy during long trips to the Americas. These ships were moored in the shelter of Monaco's famous Port Hercules - the port that, according to local legend, was created by the powerful Hercules.
