About Bugvita

In 2014 Adam Banks moved to Mexico for work. Insects are an important part of Mexican cuisine and, after tasting his first taco stuffed with escamoles, Adam was hooked! Then, in 2018, Adam was awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarship to investigate how insects were being farmed for food around the world and to see what opportunities might exist to rear insects for food in the UK. Adam then launched Instar Farming and after lots of trial and error - experimenting with different feeds, adjusting the temperature, tweaking the humidity - success! A method was developed to rear large numbers of healthy crickets. Farming crickets is one thing, turning them into tasty and nutritious food is another. Bugvita does just that. Using specially developed techniques, crickets are cleaned, sterilised, dried and milled into a fine powder. As the business has grown, Bugvita has invested in state of the art processing facilities. They have also begun to work with other UK farms to produce high quality, sustainable crickets. These are then harvested, frozen, and brought to the Bugvita facility for processing. Bugvita is constantly looking at new and exiting ways to bring tasty and nutritious cricket products to their customers. It started with cricket powder and whole roasted crickets. Bugvita then created a range of flavoured cricket snacks, including smoked and BBQ. They are now producing a line of home cooking mixes containing crickets, which will be available soon.Read their story
