Michelle Hewitt is a distinguished artist renowned for her intricate animal pastel drawings. With a lifelong passion for the natural world, Michelle’s artistic journey began early, inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s Young Hare study, which sparked her enduring fascination with drawing and painting animals. The influence of Old Masters, particularly the portraiture of Rubens, is also evident in her work, especially in her attention to the eyes—an element she considers the most crucial in any piece. Michelle believes that the eyes must be completed fully before moving on to the rest of the composition, ensuring they capture the soul of the subject. Specialising in soft pastels, Michelle values the medium for its versatility and ability to produce a soft, textured definition, perfect for portraying the fine details of fur and feathers. The lack of drying time allows her to work fluidly and intuitively, enhancing the lifelike quality of her portraits.
