About Stranger's Guide

Stranger’s Guide, a travel publication that explores the power of place-based journalism to break down stereotypes and foster global citizenship, was founded in 2018 by Editor in Chief Kira Brunner Don and Publisher Abby Rapoport. Stranger’s Guide includes print guides, newsletters, and carefully-selected products and partnerships. Based in Texas and California, the publication commissions stories from local writers and photographers to build authentic portraits of a place. Stranger’s Guide‘s work has been featured in the Best American Travel Writing collection, and the magazine has won two National Magazine Awards in General Excellence and Photography. Through arresting photography, luminous essays, and fascinating facts and figures, our collectible print guides bring together topics as diverse as arts, sports, politics and human rights to provide a new understanding of each place. Rather than parachute in foreign writers, our guides feature original works from local voices. These stories portray unique facets of each place, from the complex and controversial to the intimate and beautiful, together building a contemporary awareness of the location and its culture. Our volumes have featured a number of world-renowned writers, including Cervantes Prize winner Elena Poniatowska, National Book Award winner Colum McCann and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.
