About Yarbs & Roots

I was raised in a family who cared deeply about where their family’s food came from and shared an interest in natural home remedies particularly with beauty products. Childhood memories of experimenting with my mother making hair and skin masks inspired me to begin creating products for my family. The founding of Yarbs & Roots was inspired by two things; the demand for natural hair care products for curly and coily hair types, and my racially mixed family. As a woman of color who grew up in a Black family, I experienced the difficulties of trying to find natural and organic hair care products that truly worked for me and my loved ones. Later in life, I began to grow a racially mixed family with my husband and together we found it challenging to find products that matched the diverse needs of our household. Our family ranges from having thick, curly hair to straight, fine hair; we have dark and light complexions; and our skin types include sensitive baby skin, teenage acne-prone skin, and rough weather-damaged skin. So, in 2006, I began to create hair and body care products from pure, natural ingredients. My longstanding interest in nutrition, herbalism, and body care, combined with my experience as a doula, has allowed me to create products that my family, friends and community have enjoyed for over a decade.
