Deckled Edge is based in the tranquil countryside of North Norfolk, where artist-led drawings and paintings are created in close response to rural life. Working entirely by hand, often in coloured pencil, the practice is rooted in close observation and a deep respect for craftsmanship, patience, and process. While the horse remains a central subject, the work also explores the wider rhythms of the countryside — from the watchful stillness of hares in cover crops to the fleeting presence of pheasants, sporting objects, and traditions shaped by land and season. Each piece seeks to capture more than physical form, focusing instead on presence, character, and the quiet tension found between movement and rest. Life in rural Norfolk provides constant inspiration: animals poised in alertness, landscapes marked by use and memory, and the subtle exchanges between people, animals, and place. These observations are translated into works that invite the viewer to pause and engage in an intimate visual encounter. All artworks are created freehand, without tracing or projection, and built through hundreds of carefully layered strokes to achieve depth, luminosity, and finely balanced tonal transitions. Even seemingly monochrome works often contain a complex range of blended hues. Alongside drawing, oil painting is now being explored, introducing new scale, texture, and movement.
