Gertie 2021 Cabernet Franc, Clare Valley, South Australia Notes from Ben, the winemaker... How It All Began After making wine for larger Corporates over the years I needed a creative outlet, a place I could flex some of my 20 years’ experience and make a wine that I wanted to drink. I craved a wine with detail and deliciousness in equal measure; a wine that could be consumed at a BBQ, but equally stand up in a line-up of its European counterparts. I sourced Cabernet Franc, the unsung hero of some of The Clare Valley’s best Cabernets, with a focus on letting the fruit speak. The winemaking intervention is minimal but calculated. The result is Gertie. The Vintage 2021 is possibly the best red Vintage I have seen in the Clare Valley. That’s a big call after 2016 and 2018. The season started with good winter rains, followed by cool nights. This continued throughout almost the entire growing season, giving extended hang time without losing freshness and focus. The fruit is sourced from our 2-hectare vineyard, in combination with fruit from 60-year-old vines from a grower at the Northern end of the valley. The Tech Alc 13.8% Ph 3.63 TA 6.4 Unfined, unfiltered, wild ferment, 4% whole bunch, vegan friendly and delicious.
