Dear grandfather: I know that you will never receive this letter, I know that never again, except in my memories, will I go fishing with you in the river, there, in that backwater under the willows with those old wooden reeds, and I also know that Williot will not be sniffing around burrows running through the grass. You, Williot, your old sneakers, and that blond boy who opened his eyes to the world, ecstatic at the beauty of what he saw. I know, and yet I write these lines to tell you wherever you are that I have finally fulfilled the promise of honoring your memory with what in my childhood told me the most about you; your old sneakers as a scholarship student at Oxford, and Williot, the dog who faithfully accompanied you until his death. With Williot, I express that emotion, perhaps the truest that a person can feel, the satisfaction for things well done, as they were done before, by hand, and the pride of having developed a brand suitable for people as demanding, independent and perhaps as bohemian as you were, grandfather.
